Marcus Rashford delivered a dazzling performance on his Champions League debut for Barcelona, scoring twice to secure a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The England striker, on loan from Manchester United, proved decisive as Eddie Howe’s side endured a frustrating start to their European campaign.
Rashford broke the deadlock in the 58th minute with a powerful header from Jules Koundé’s cross, silencing the raucous home support.
Nine minutes later, he produced an even more stunning moment, unleashing a thunderous 20-yard strike that crashed in off the crossbar, leaving goalkeeper Nick Pope helpless.
They were his first Champions League goals since 2021, and they came in front of England head coach Thomas Tuchel, who was watching from the stands.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick had to cope without injured teenage star Lamine Yamal, but his side still displayed their attacking depth.
Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong impressed, while Pedri and Fermin Lopez controlled midfield.
Rashford, however, stole the spotlight, receiving a standing ovation from travelling fans when he was substituted ten minutes from time.
For Newcastle, the night carried both promise and regret. Howe left new £69m striker Nick Woltemade on the bench, preferring Anthony Gordon as a central forward.
Gordon struggled to make an impact for most of the match, though he did pull a goal back in stoppage time.
The Magpies had earlier missed a golden opportunity when Harvey Barnes failed to capitalise on Anthony Elanga’s clever pass in the first half.
The atmosphere at St James’ Park was electric, with former Newcastle hero Faustino Asprilla in attendance, evoking memories of his famous 1997 hat-trick against Barcelona.
But despite their effort and passionate backing from the Toon Army, Newcastle could not find a way back once Rashford struck twice in quick succession.
Barcelona, who lost in last season’s semi-final to Inter Milan, will hope this victory signals another deep run in the competition.
Newcastle, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as they turn their focus back to domestic duties, travelling to Bournemouth on Sunday before facing Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.
