Real Madrid are stepping up their search for midfield reinforcements, with both Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo emerging as potential targets before the transfer window closes.
Head coach Xabi Alonso is pushing for additions as Dani Ceballos edges closer to a move to Marseille, leaving the squad short of depth in central areas.
Wharton has been a long-standing name on Madrid’s shortlist and could become a top priority if Ceballos departs.
Alonso views the 21-year-old Englishman as a strong option to provide tactical stability in the absence of Jude Bellingham, who will not return until October, and Eduardo Camavinga, who is sidelined until mid-September.
Palace, however, are demanding a hefty €80m (£69m/$93m) for the midfielder, who is tied down at Selhurst Park until 2029.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s Mainoo has also caught the attention of both Madrid clubs.
The 20-year-old England international has grown frustrated at Old Trafford after being frozen out under new boss Ruben Amorim and failing to feature in United’s opening Premier League fixtures.
Reports in England suggest Mainoo is keen to leave before deadline day, with both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid considering a loan approach.
United, however, are reluctant to sanction a temporary move. The Red Devils have made it clear they would only consider a permanent sale if a sizeable offer arrives.
Having struggled with injuries last season, Mainoo’s opportunities have further diminished with Amorim preferring other midfield options in his system. Unless an attractive bid is tabled, United are expected to keep hold of their academy product.
Beyond Wharton and Mainoo, Madrid are also monitoring AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit, who impressed at the U19 European Championship and would represent a cheaper investment at €25-30m.
If no external deal materialises, Alonso is prepared to turn to 18-year-old academy midfielder Thiago Pitarch, who has already made senior matchday squads this season.
