Real Madrid’s march at the top of La Liga hit a slight bump on Sunday evening as Xabi Alonso’s men were held to a 0-0 draw by a disciplined Rayo Vallecano side at the Estadio de Vallecas. 

The result trims Madrid’s lead at the summit to five points, leaving the title race slightly more open heading into the international break.

Los Blancos, who had won 10 of their 12 league games prior to kickoff, came into the match looking to restore their seven-point cushion after Villarreal leapfrogged into second place with a 2-0 victory at Espanyol on Saturday. 

However, Rayo, who had claimed three wins from their previous five outings, frustrated the visitors throughout a tense encounter in the Spanish capital.

The hosts produced one of the game’s best chances in the first half through defender Raul Asencio, who found himself unmarked in the box but failed to steer his header on target. 

His miss proved a let-off for Madrid, who struggled to find their rhythm against a compact and well-organised Vallecano defence.

In attack, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham carried Madrid’s biggest threats but were unable to convert their chances. Both players spurned opportunities in either half as Vallecano goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski stood firm to preserve his clean sheet. 

Substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold, making a late cameo appearance, was unable to influence proceedings in Madrid’s favour.

The result means Real Madrid’s attacking momentum has slightly stalled after an impressive run that had seen them score in 10 consecutive league matches. 

While Alonso’s side remain clear favourites for the title, the lack of cutting edge in front of goal will be a concern as the season progresses.

Elsewhere, the focus now turns to Barcelona, who can reduce Madrid’s lead to just three points if they defeat Celta Vigo later on Sunday evening. 

With both Spanish giants showing signs of inconsistency, the 2025–26 La Liga campaign is shaping up to be another fiercely contested race for the crown.
