Real Madrid takes narrow lead over Atlético Madrid in Champions League tie

Real Madrid has taken a narrow 2-1 aggregate lead over Atlético Madrid in their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie after a thrilling contest at the Santiago Bernabéu. The match marked the end of Atlético’s 10-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.

The hosts, Real Madrid, took an early lead through Rodrygo’s stunning strike in the fourth minute. The Brazilian winger received a pass from Federico Valverde and made a darting run into the box, unleashing an unstoppable left-footed shot past Jan Oblak.

Atlético Madrid responded well to the early setback, with Giuliano Simeone missing a golden opportunity to equalize. However, Julián Alvarez leveled the score with an impressive finish, outmuscling Eduardo Camavinga and smashing a right-footed strike past Thibaut Courtois.

The visitors continued to play with confidence in the second half, but it was Real Madrid who scored the decisive goal through Brahim Díaz. The Moroccan international expertly weaved his way into the box and fired a clinical finish past Oblak.

The goal gave Real Madrid a renewed sense of swagger, and they controlled the remainder of the match. However, there were few further goalscoring opportunities, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg in eight days’ time.

Atlético Madrid’s defeat denied them a sixth consecutive Champions League victory and a chance to break their club-record winning streak in the competition. Despite this, they remain firmly in contention to turn the tie around in the second leg.

The result gives Real Madrid a narrow advantage, and they will be confident of progressing to the next round. They have now lost only one of their previous 18 European knockout fixtures, and their experience and quality will make them a formidable opponent in the second leg.

Real Madrid will face Rayo Vallecano in La Liga for the weekend before the second-leg tie next week.
