India triumphs over Australia to secure Champions Trophy final spot

India has secured a spot in the final of the Champions Trophy after beating Australia by four wickets on Tuesday. This win meant a lot for India as they not only broke their recent losing streak against Australia in major ICC knockouts but also ensured their third consecutive appearance in the Champions Trophy final. India will now face either South Africa or New Zealand in the final, scheduled for Sunday in Dubai.

This win marked the end of a 14-year wait for India to conquer Australia in an ICC knockout match, their last victory coming in the 2011 ODI World Cup quarter-final. Since then, Australia had led their encounters, including the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

The match began with Australia winning the toss and opting to bat first. However, their innings got off to a rocky start when Mohammed Shami dismissed opener Cooper Connolly for a duck. Steve Smith, with a composed 73, steadied the innings, forming crucial partnerships with Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne. Despite these efforts, Australia’s total of 264 was considered below par, largely due to India’s bowling strategy and the pitch conditions that favoured spin.

Virat Kohli was at the forefront of India’s chase, himself scoring a pivotal 84 off 98 deliveries. His partnership with Shreyas Iyer, which yielded 91 runs, was instrumental in stabilizing the innings. After Kohli’s dismissal, KL Rahul took charge, finishing unbeaten with 42 runs off 34 balls. Hardik Pandya’s cameo of 28 runs, including three sixes, further hastened India’s chase, ensuring they crossed the line with 11 balls to spare.

India’s victory was not just about individual brilliance but also about the value of adopting the right strategy. Rohit Sharma’s decision to rotate his bowlers effectively restricted Australia’s scoring, while the spinners, including Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, made the most of the pitch conditions to pick crucial wickets. In the chase, India remained calculating, never letting the required run rate get out of hand.
