Real Sociedad secures rare European knockout triumph over FC Midtjylland

Real Sociedad achieved a significant milestone in their European campaign, securing a 2-1 victory over FC Midtjylland in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) Round of 32. This triumph marks their first European knockout win in 14 major games, dating back to November 1998 when they defeated Atlético Madrid.

The Danish side, FC Midtjylland, started strong, with Denil Castillo’s header clipping the left post in the early stages of the game. However, Real Sociedad soon gained control, and Brais Méndez earned a penalty after Oliver Sørensen’s foul. Méndez coolly dispatched the penalty into the bottom left corner, giving Sociedad the lead.

Despite Midtjylland’s efforts to respond quickly, Unai Marrero produced two stunning saves to deny Dario Osorio and Aral Şimşir. Takefusa Kubo then unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner, doubling Sociedad’s lead. However, Midtjylland halved the deficit before halftime, with Adam Buksa capping off a slick team move with a close-range tap-in.

The second half saw Real Sociedad intensify their assault, with Orri Óskarsson, Martín Zubimendi, and Pablo Marín all threatening before the hour mark. Despite enjoying a domestic break to focus on the UEL, Thomas Thomasberg’s men struggled to break down a resolute La Real side. Midtjylland almost conceded a third goal when substitute Mikel Oyarzabal forced a goal-line clearance with 14 minutes to play.

The defeat marks FC Midtjylland’s first loss of the new year and in three UEL games. Real Sociedad, on the other hand, claims only their second triumph in their last six competitive away games, keeping their hopes alive of advancing deep into this season’s European second-tier tournament. The two teams will meet again next week at the Reale Arena in San Sebastián.

Real Sociedad will travel to face Real Betis on Sunday, February 16, in La Liga, where they currently sit in seventh with just two wins in their last five matches, which also includes three losses.
