Reece James urges FIFA to delay World Cup kick-off times over heat concerns

England defender Reece James has called on FIFA to consider rescheduling kick-off times for the 2026 World Cup due to the extreme summer temperatures expected in host nations the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Chelsea captain expressed concern about player safety, saying later matches could help reduce the risks associated with high heat and humidity during games.

James, 25, recently led Chelsea to victory in the Club World Cup held in the U.S., where temperatures reached as high as 38°C. The tournament drew criticism over the playing conditions, with teammate Enzo Fernández describing the heat as “very dangerous” and admitting he felt dizzy during matches.

Reflecting on the experience, James said it was “super difficult” to perform under such conditions, especially for players more accustomed to England’s cooler climate.

Research from Queen’s University Belfast has indicated that 14 of the 16 venues selected for the 2026 World Cup could reach dangerously high temperatures during the tournament period.

Vities like Philadelphia were placed under severe heat warnings this summer, with humidity pushing the perceived temperature to around 45°C. These findings have intensified calls for FIFA to adjust match schedules to protect players.

James suggested that holding games later in the day would make a significant difference. “Later kick-offs when it’s not so hot and humid would definitely help,” he said.

England manager Thomas Tuchel and assistant coach Anthony Barry are reportedly in agreement, with plans already underway for a warm-weather training camp in Florida to help the squad acclimatise ahead of next summer’s competition.

The defender also revealed that he had not been personally consulted by FIFA about his experience in the Club World Cup, though he believes the governing body has gathered feedback from managers and club representatives.

FIFA is reportedly exploring scheduling options similar to the Club World Cup format, where matches kicked off at 17:00, 20:00, 23:00, and 02:00 BST, meaning many European viewers would watch games after midnight.
