England winger Bukayo Saka says the team still carries the “scar” of their heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina as they prepare to begin a new international campaign.
England were beaten 2-1 after conceding two late goals, missing out on the chance to reach their first men’s World Cup final since 1966.
The defeat came after Thomas Tuchel’s side progressed deep into the tournament, hoping to end England’s long wait for another major international trophy.
The Three Lions eventually secured third place by beating France 6-4 in a thrilling bronze-medal match, giving them their best World Cup finish in six decades.
Saka admitted that the disappointment remains difficult to completely forget, particularly because of the belief surrounding the team and the support they received from across the country.
However, the Arsenal winger said England are now attempting to move forward and focus on their upcoming Nations League campaign, which begins with a major test against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday.
The winger said England face four important group matches over the next two weeks as they attempt to qualify for the Nations League knockout stages.
The meeting with Spain will provide an immediate reminder of the World Cup disappointment while giving Tuchel’s squad an opportunity to begin a new phase of the international season.
Meanwhile, Saka has backed Arsenal teenager Max Dowman to earn a senior England call-up in the future.
The 16-year-old has impressed with his ability at club level, with Saka describing his talent as “insane” and saying it will ultimately be up to Dowman how far he progresses in his career.
England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley also praised Dowman’s ability but believes remaining with the Under-19s during the current international window can help the teenager continue his development without unnecessary pressure.
Carsley said Dowman has the ability to play at Under-21 level but that regular minutes and time to consolidate his progress remain important as England consider his long-term international pathway.
