    Senegal prepares for Belgium test

    July 1, 2026

Group winners Belgium will hope to start a winning run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a stern test against Senegal.

Both in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup the Seattle Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Although they finished as group winners, Belgium have failed to impress on the world stage after their success at the 2018 edition, where they emerged third.

Senegal will be going into the clash with a high level of confidence, having given France and Norway a run for their money, but came up short later in the game before trouncing Iraq to emerge as the last best third-place team.

Senegal, who were dethroned as the CAF African Nations trophy winners, will surely not be a pushover for the Red Devils.

Although it’s also a good time for Rudi Garcia’s side, which recovered from a slow start to top their group, they have shown inconsistency throughout.

Belgium won the group courtesy of goal difference ahead of Egypt with five points, six goals scored, and two conceded.

Analysts and predictors find it hard to give Belgium favourable predictions, as their path through the group stage was far from convincing and will have offered encouragement to Senegal’s camp.

Egypt held Garcia’s side to a 1-1 draw in their opening fixture before being pegged to a goalless outing against Iran, which further raised serious questions about their tournament credentials.

However, a commanding 5-0 dismantling of New Zealand in the final group game provided some much-needed relief and momentum they seek to carry into the knockout stage.

There was obvious pressure on the team before Leandro Trossad eventually got them on the way to the trouncing of their opponent.

This is what Senegal, which has nothing to lose, will want to capitalize on and will want to continue further in the tournament.

With a victory here, it would be the third shocker at the tournament, as Morocco and Paraguay already sent the Netherlands and Germany packing in the round of 32 via penalties.

The Teranga Lions, which won the last AFCON via penalties, could bank on such confidence and hold Belgium till this moment, but denying them space for creativity.

Although Belgium, who are ranked ninth in the world by FIFA, carry genuine pedigree into this knockout tie with their best-ever World Cup finish in 2018, when they claimed third place,  that golden generation suffered a shock group-stage exit in 2022.

They will therefore need to defeat Senegal to secure a place in the round of 16, which would represent a significant step towards the kind of deep run that would define this Belgium generation.

For this to be achieved, Garcia knows that performances must improve significantly.

After suffering back-to-back defeats against Norway and France, Pape Thiaw’s side needed a result in their final fixture and delivered emphatically – a 5-0 victory over Iraq not only secured their progression but made history as the first time an African nation had scored five goals in a single World Cup match.

The Lions of Teranga will now be driven by the desire to match and then surpass their best-ever World Cup finish, the quarter-final appearance achieved at the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.

Having been ousted by England in the round of 16 in the 2022 edition, Senegal has the chance to surpass that, but must first send Belgium home.

With Morocco already in the last 16, Senegal is also another African side carrying the weight of the continent’s hopes as they look to become the last African side standing deep into this tournament.

Belgium are expected to have more possession and test Senegal’s tendency to concede because the Red Devils have some of the most creative midfield talent in the tournament.

This will be the first-ever meeting between these two nations at any level, adding a genuinely historic dimension to what promises to be a compelling knockout fixture.
