AS Roma had to work hard for a point at Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium on Sunday after finishing with ten men when Donyell Malen was sent off for a dangerous play.
This is the second time in a row the Rome club will finish with ten men against Como,, as Wesley was sent off in the same home fixture last season.
Having been down to ten since 53 minutes, Roma were ultimately pleased with the first 0-0 of the Serie A season away to Como.
Both sides will enter their UEFA Champions League Day 2 clash on a high after snatching qualification for the money-spinning tournament last season.
The first chance came Roma’s way, but Paulo Dybala scuffed a finish straight at Jean Butez after a Donyell Malen knockdown.
Pierluigi Gollini, who has not had an opportunity between the sticks for the Giallorossi since January, rushed off his line to close down Nico Paz at the near post.
Pellegrini was close to opening the goal chat with a strike thumping the base of the upright from the edge of the area on 11 minutes.
Como almost punished their visitors as Gianluca Mancini’s scuffed a clearance after an awkward bounce, allowing Maxence Caqueret to drill inches wide.
Roma had a half chance as well when Malen flicked a long Pellegrini ball around Butez, but the angle was too narrow to score.
Gollini, who played just one game for the Rome club last season, didn’t seem rusty as he rushed out to smother at the feet of Caqueret on a Yan Couto through ball.
Roma was let off the hook as they could have been one man down on the stroke of half-time. Wesley clipped Assane Diao’s heel as he was running towards goal, but the referee waved play on and only booked the Como player for dissent, much to the incredulity of Cesc Fabregas.
Evan Ndicka’s presence saved the extremely risky situation, as there was no VAR intervention.
The referee, this time, flashed a straight red card after the restart to Malen because the Roma striker lunged into a tackle after a heavy touch, but went over the ball and studs-up on Bruno Kaiki’s ankle.
The momentum then went Como’s way, and they nearly took advantage, but Maxi Perrone ballooned over from 12 yards after Diao sent Wesley to the ground.
Tasos Douvikas could get his shot on target as he smashed his finish against the side netting.
Meanwhile, there was a change of referee in the 67th minute when Michael Fabbri sustained a knee injury. He then exchanged places with fourth official Simone Sozza for the final 20 minutes.
Gollini showed match fitness again as he palmed a Nico Paz snapshot over the bar, and rushed off his line again to deny the Argentina talent on a ball over the top.
Roma kept their composure despite being under siege for the final stages.
Mancini threw himself in the way of a Trevoh Chalobah effort, and Douvikas skimmed the far post with an angled drive in stoppages.
