South Africa have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Rwanda 3-0 in their final Group C match on Tuesday, clinching top spot ahead of Nigeria and Benin. 

The victory at the Mbombela Stadium marks Bafana Bafana’s first World Cup appearance since they hosted the tournament in 2010, ending a 15-year absence from football’s biggest stage.

Heading into the final round of fixtures, Benin topped the group, two points clear of South Africa and three ahead of Nigeria. 

However, their campaign collapsed in dramatic fashion after a 4-0 defeat to the Super Eagles in Uyo. Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen was the star of the show, netting a hat-trick to power his team past the Cheetahs and keep their qualification hopes alive. The result dropped Benin to third place, behind Nigeria on goal difference.

With the door suddenly open, Hugo Broos’ South African side took full advantage. Thalente Mbatha opened the scoring in the fifth minute before Oswin Appollis doubled the lead midway through the first half. 

Evidence Makgopa sealed the victory in the 72nd minute with a well-taken header, sending the Mbombela crowd into celebration. South Africa’s composed performance ensured they topped the group, completing a remarkable turnaround after earlier setbacks in their campaign.

Bafana Bafana’s achievement is particularly sweet given their earlier 3-0 forfeit loss to Lesotho in March for fielding an ineligible player, a ruling that briefly jeopardized their qualification hopes. 

For Nigeria, the win over Benin came as both a relief and a reminder of what might have been. Osimhen’s treble, combined with Frank Onyeka’s stoppage-time strike, ensured the Super Eagles finished second in Group C, earning a place in next month’s CAF play-offs. 

The team’s path to the World Cup, however, remains challenging; they will need to navigate an additional four matches, including a final intercontinental qualifier, to reach the finals.
