Southgate hints at the end of the road as England manager

England manager Gareth Southgate has hinted at the end of the road for him as the head coach of the Three Lions after implying that Euro 2024 is his last chance of winning the competition or major tournament with the team.

Southgate has led England to the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and a Euros Final since taking charge of the team eight years ago and the manager, who is being linked to the Manchester United position if Erik Ten Hag is sacked, believes he’s running out of time with fans on the job.

“If we don’t win, I probably won’t be here anymore. Then, it might be the last chance. If we want to be a big team, and I want to be a top coach, then you have to deliver in the big moments. I think about half of the national coaches leave after a tournament – that’s the nature of international football. I’ve been here for almost eight years now, and we’ve come close. So I know that you can’t keep standing in front of the public and saying ‘please do a little more’ because at some point people will lose faith in your message,” said Southgate.

Gareth Southgate, a 53-year-old, was employed in 2016, and he has managed to take his side to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar. His current deal with the English FA will run out in December, but the Football Association is hoping that he will sign a contract extension as manager of the Three Lions for the next World Cup in 2026 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

England are in Group C of the 2024 Euros in Germany with Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia, with the first game of the competition coming up on Sunday, June 16, against Serbia.
