Spalletti storms out of press conference after leaving Italy job

Luciano Spalletti has confirmed his resignation as the head coach of the Italy national team.

The former AS Roma and Inter Milan manager made this known at the end of his press conference on Sunday before storming out in frustration at the line of questioning from reporters.

Spalletti confirmed that he will cease to be the head of Italy’s national team after the World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Monday.

This followed the revelation that he had already been informed that he would be relieved of his job. But he’s s decided to terminate his contract after the Moldova match instead.

The news is following a humiliating 3-0 loss away against Norway, which has made their route to World Cup qualification difficult. ,  Italy are currently nine points off the top of Group I after just one match.

Spalletti said during the latest Italy press conference revealed that he got to know about the development last night but had no intention of giving up his role initially.

“I would have preferred to stay and do my job, especially when things aren’t going well. However, if it’s an exoneration, then I have to accept it. I have always seen this role as a service to the homeland, and I want to help the future of the national team,” he added.

While stating that the right thing is to look for the best, he revealed that he would terminate his contract.

“I’ll be there tomorrow night against Moldova. I have always maintained that my players are strong. The results under my management are what they are, and I have to take responsibility.

“I love this shirt, this job, and the players that I’ve coached. Tomorrow night, I will ask them to give what I’ve asked from them, even if I was not able to get them to show their best.”

Speaking of what hurts the most after he decides to leave the Italy head coach job, Spalletti regretted not achieving the quality of play he wanted.

While noting the difficulty the job entails, the tactician admitted that he probably deserved worse because of his results.

Spalletti, however, remained convinced that Azzurri will still make it to the World Cup.

After being asked if he felt betrayed and the state he was leaving the team in, a visibly tired and frustrated Spalletti got up and left his press conference.
