In a candid conversation on the Gary Neville podcast, Walcott shared his emotions about hanging up his boots. “It scares me, I’m not going to lie to you, because football has been all I’ve known since I was 16 or even before. Now I want to try new things that I couldn’t even do as a kid.”
Walcott’s journey saw him spend four years at Everton before returning to Southampton, the club where he chose to retire. Despite offers from various teams, including Saudi Arabia, Walcott expressed that he couldn’t envision himself playing football there. On the international stage, Walcott’s call-up at the age of 17 for the 2006 World Cup marked the beginning of an illustrious international career with 47 appearances for the ‘Three Lions’.
Reflecting on his retirement, Walcott shared heartfelt sentiments. “From playing in the park with friends to performing in some of the biggest stadiums in front of crowds worldwide. The support that has been shown to me throughout this time has been incredible.”
Walcott extended gratitude to his mentors and coaches, highlighting the pivotal role of individuals like Harry Redknapp and Arsene Wenger. “Having had the chance to represent England 47 times and going to the 2006 World Cup aged just 17, and holding the record for the youngest debut by an England senior team player and for the youngest scoring hat trick, with 19 years, are sensations that I will never forget.”
While Walcott’s career may not have been an overnight superstar success, it’s impossible to overlook the moments he etched in the football history books.
