There were big and shocking upsets on Wednesday when several teams played in the EFL Cup, with results going against London clubs and big teams.

At the Emirates Stadium where Arsenal, who are the Premier League table toppers, welcomed Brighton.

The Gunners had only lost once in the Premier League this season in a 3-1 loss to Manchester United, and it was the same scoreline that Brighton got on Wednesday night to knock the Gunners out of the EFL Cup.

Mikel Arteta fielded a young side that had Eddie Nketiah up front as well as Fabio Vieira and the Brazilian midfielder Marquinhos.

Elsewhere, North London rivals Tottenham were also knocked out by relegation strugglers Nottingham Forest with a 2-0 victory. Brazilian Defender Renan Lodi who missed out on the FIFA World Cup list for the Brazilian national team was on target.

Liverpool were held to a 0-0 draw Derby county, but the Reds moved through 3-2 on penalties.

Algerian forward Riyad Mahrez was on target as Manchester City beat Chelsea 2-0. Wolves pipped Leeds United 1-0.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was impressed with the display of the youngsters he trusted for the game.

“We are really good. Pleased with the result and performance because of how good Chelsea are. Julian Alvarez has been an exceptional player from day one. He scores loads of goals. He fights against one of the best strikers in the world. Erling is not fully fit. They can play together. Good players can always play together.” He said.
