Olympique Marseille have announced the departure of Hamed Junior Traoré, and Mason Greenwood may follow suit shortly.
The 26-year-old Ivory Coast international has undergone his medical examination with Genoa, while the 24-year-old Greenwood has never been closer to joining Fenerbahçe.
Marseille are already planning the revamping of their squad after Pablo Longoria and Medhi Benatia got some bargains last summer for two players.
Traoré was out of the squad after a season marked by injuries and a few rare flashes of attacking brilliance, such as against Paris Saint-Germain in the Trophée des Champions.
The Ligue 1 club have released the Ivorian on a loan deal to Genoa for the season, with an €8 million option to buy.
Traoré, who’s already in Genoa, joined Marseille from Bournemouth on loan with a mandatory purchase option of €8 million, but for 50% of the player’s rights.
Marseille intend to get rid of Traoré’s salary, estimated at €320,000 gross per month, having done so in June, before the relevant authorities committed to drastically reducing its wage bill by €69 million, bringing it down from €163 million (for the record 2025-2026 season) to €94 million.
As for Greenwood, his transfer is expected to be confirmed after Beijing was spotted at Marignane Airport yesterday at midday, in Terminal 2.
According to reports, two Fenerbahçe executives, Oguz Çetin and Cihan Kamer, were also in the area, but they didn’t travel together.
It was gathered that because Greenwood had missed training on Friday and Sunday, the 24-year-old striker went to recharge and consider his future while his father and lawyer wrapped up the paperwork, having already reached an agreement with Fenerbahçe’s management for three weeks on a lucrative four-year contract.
Spanish side Atlético were also in the race as the English player weighed up the Turkish club’s offer with that of Atlético Madrid.
Atlético almost matched Fenerbahçe’s financial offer, but they opted out. They’ve also discovered a surprisingly nonchalant player, who can tell his Marseille teammates he prefers the Atlético Madrid challenge, yet takes two days to respond to Diego Simeone.
This indolent attitude, coupled with his controversial past, which has already deterred several suitors from Saudi Arabia, led to Atlético withdrawing their offer on Monday evening. Everything is now in place for Fenerbahçe, who have prepared a €40 million offer.
