UCL: Atleti’s last kick secure maximum points against PSG

Athletico Madrid took maximum points against Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain courtesy of an injury-time winner at Parc des Prince in the Day four UEFA Champions League game.

The La Liga giants had suffered back-to-back defeats in the Champions League before securing this sensational win.

Atletico Madrid have bounced back in fine style as Diego Simeone’s side came from behind to secure a 2-1 success.

The hosts got an early lead as Clement Lenglet made a disastrous error that allowed Ousmane Dembele to set up teenage midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery.

However, Atleti restored parity a few minutes later when Nahuel Molina found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Despite their dominance in the second half, as they searched for the winner and came close several times to scoring their second of the evening, it was their visitors that laughed last after stealing victory in the 94th minute as substitute Angel Correa fired past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

This result showed PSG’s continued struggles in the competition this season. They were gifted the opener when Clément Lenglet was easily dispossessed in the box by Dembele, who fed Zaire-Emery and his France teammate finished with a clinical chip in the 14th minute.

That spurred Atleti into action, and they needed just four minutes to restore parity as Molina smashed a half-volley home after poor defending by Nuno Mendes following Gianluigi Donnarumma’s initial save to deny Giuliano Simeone.

After wasting several chances to regain their lead, Luis Enrique sent Randal Kolo Muani and Lee Kang in for PSG, but neither had a chance.

Their struggles continue. They obviously lack an experienced striker, as they have only scored three goals in four games in the competition.

Substitute Correa kept his cool in the area to slot the ball past Donnarumma at the end of a swift counterattack just before the final whistle, triggering a barrage of boos and whistles from the home crowd.

With this smash-and-grab victory,  their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League look much rosier now, as they move on to six points in the league phase.

PSG are now in the elimination zone, having gathered four points from as many games. They are 25th in the 36-team League, while Atleti moved out of the red zone with six points.

PSG will now have to secure a win at the Allianz Arena when they face Bayern Munich and then host RB Salzburg.

Atletico, on the other hand, play Sparta Prague away and Slovan Bratislava at home.
