Liverpool made history on Tuesday evening by becoming the first Premier League side to win all six UEFA Champions League group stage games.
The Reds had secured qualification into the knockout stage of the competition before the game in Milan, while AC Milan needed a win to be assured of progress.
The Italian seemed on course when they led in the 29th minute through Fikayo Tomori, but Mohammed Salah equalised before halftime. Divock Origi got the winner ten minutes after the break, and Jürgen Klopp’s side was able to hold on for a record-making victory. AC Milan, on the other hand, were effectively knocked out of Europe.
Manchester City ended their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign with a 2-1 loss to RB Leipzig in Germany. Pep Guardiola’s side had already confirmed qualification as group winners before the game; hence it was no surprise when the Premier League side’s starting lineup saw Zackary Steffen in goal instead of Ederson.
RB Leipzig needed the game more as they needed to win, and they led in the 24th minute through Hungarian forward Dominik Szoboszlai. Andre Silva doubled the lead in the 71st minute, but six minutes later, Riyadh Mahrez scored City’s consolation.
There was drama as Nathan Ake was sent off with few minutes left on the clock, the work had been done before the game; hence the damage done was of minimal impact as Leipzig took the reward of the UEFA Europa League after Club Brugge lost to PSG in France.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Chelsea will face Zenit in Russia, while Manchester United will host Young Boys. Ralf Rangnick will be hoping to start his UEFA Champions League record at United with a victory over a team that beat United in the first leg in Switzerland.
