Manchester City’s hopes of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals were dealt a major blow after Federico Valverde produced a stunning first-half hat-trick to put Real Madrid firmly in command of this last-16 tie.
Pep Guardiola’s side began with energy and purpose, asking early questions of the Spanish giants and forcing a nervous spell. But for all City’s bright attacking play, their defensive weaknesses were badly exposed by a Real team missing several key names.
Without injured stars Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, and with Rodrygo also absent, Real still found more than enough quality to punish City. Valverde was the driving force, delivering a performance of composure, movement and ruthless finishing that left the visitors facing a mountain to climb.
The breakthrough came after 20 minutes and owed much to direct, decisive play. Thibaut Courtois launched a long pass over the top, catching Nico O’Reilly out of position. Valverde raced through, rounded the advancing Gianluigi Donnarumma and finished from a tight angle to hand Real the lead.
Seven minutes later, Real struck again. Valverde once more found space and calmly sent a low shot across Donnarumma to double the advantage and deepen City’s problems. The second goal knocked the confidence out of Guardiola’s side, who had looked lively in the opening stages but now struggled to contain the growing threat.
Valverde completed his hat-trick in memorable fashion. Meeting a clever lofted through-ball, the Real captain showed outstanding imagination in a crowded area, lifting the ball over Marc Guehi before dispatching a volley beyond Donnarumma. It was a goal of both flair and precision, underlining his dominance on the night.
City had a chance to reduce the damage when they thought they had found a route back into the contest. O’Reilly reacted sharply after pouncing on Thiago inside the penalty area, but Courtois produced an important stop with an outstretched leg to preserve Real’s clean sheet.
There was also a moment of relief for City on the hour when Real were awarded a penalty after Donnarumma brought down Vinicius. The goalkeeper atoned for the foul by diving to his left to save Vinicius’ weakly taken spot-kick, preventing the scoreline from becoming even more punishing.
Even so, the night belonged to Valverde and a Real Madrid side who, despite missing several of their biggest names, showed the cutting edge and control of a team fully capable of punishing any mistake. For City, the challenge now looks enormous.
