Villarreal pulled off a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over newly crowned La Liga champions Barcelona at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, securing a top-five finish and a coveted spot in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. The result not only ended Barca’s celebratory week on a sour note but also capped off a spirited late-season surge for the visitors.
Barcelona had clinched the league title just days earlier with a 2-0 win over Espanyol and celebrated with over half a million fans. Despite the emotional high, they started the match flat, conceding in the fourth minute when Ayoze Pérez latched onto a cross from Nicolas Pépé to give Villarreal an early lead. The hosts responded well, though, and regained control before the break with two quickfire goals.
Teen sensation Lamine Yamal equalised with a moment of individual brilliance, cutting inside before curling a low left-footed shot into the far corner—his ninth league goal of the season.
