We have a lot of money to buy incredible players: Pep Guardiola on Manchester City’s success

As Manchester City continued their unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League, manager Pep Guardiola jokingly said that money is the biggest reason behind the club’s success.

City are on a 19-game unbeaten streak at present and that not only sees them placed comfortably at the top of the Premier League, but it has gotten them a step closer into the Champions League quarterfinals as well.

“We have a lot of money to buy a lot of incredible players,” Guardiola said at the post-match press conference on being asked about how his team had won 19 games in a row.

“It is true. Without good quality players, we cannot do it. The humanity of this group… the players are fantastic and have an incredible relationship. They play every game to think just win that game.

“Today, enjoy the night and then think about West Ham. When people talk about the second leg, the second leg is in three weeks so now the next target is West Ham. That is all I am concerned with,” he added.

Manchester City have spent a total of £2 billion ($2.8bn) as the club has established themselves as a force to reckon with in World Football. Out of that, they have spent £500m ($707m) since Guardiola took over in 2016. He has brought players like Ilkay Gundogan, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez to the club with the help of that money splashed.

Guardiola has formed a formidable defence as well, as he has brought the likes of Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Nathan Ake and Benjamin Mendy on board.

Manchester City currently have a 10-point lead over Manchester United, who are placed at the second spot. City take on West Ham United next on Saturday and the Wolverhampton Wanderers after that on Tuesday.
