Englishman Danny Willett is the latest winner of the BMW PGA Championship, after playing a five under 67, winning the game by three shots, for a total score of 20 under par.
His closest competitor Jon Rahm could not come close to him since early in the game, Willett had given him a lead, which he maintained until the game ended. Both players took advantage of each other’s mistake to edge forward, but Rahm could not just square things with Willett.
They both started the game tied at 15 under, but a decisive putt by Willett early in the game gave him the edge which he carried until the end. Other competitors like Patrick Reed and Billy Horschel tried to keep up with the two, but they just could not match their energy. The match was clearly between the two, as they both tried to do each other in, but Willet strived hard to come out on top. He shot a couple of birdies, and even his final strokes went in as birdies.
For Willett, this is a major win as he had not won something this big since the US Masters in 2016, although he won the championship in Dubai last year.
On his latest win, he said, “This has been a fairytale week for me; To win on home soil really has been amazing for me.”
Indeed, the win means so much to Willett who has had a pretty rough career these past months and has done everything to improve his situation. This win has shot up his ranking to world number 31.
Willett did everything he could to improve his shine, including changing his entire management team, and even choosing a new home. One can rightly say that he prepared himself for this win. His win makes him eligible to partake in Europe’s Ryder Cup taking place in 2020.
