Former world number one, Rory McIlroy, has addressed rumors regarding a new deal between the PGA and the PIF. Rumors were floating earlier this week that a new deal was being struck, with McIlroy and Tiger Woods playing significant parts in ending the current strife between the PIF-backed LIV league and the PGA Tour. But McIlroy, who is in Aby Dhabi for the HSBC Championship, has said that he is yet to hear a thing about a new deal.
He said: “Yeah, it’s the first that I’ve heard of it. I know Jay was in Saudi Arabia last week at the FII and was having some meetings. But no, I think I would have heard if there was.
“I know he’s briefing the transaction committee tonight. So maybe some news comes out of that. But as far as I’m aware, I haven’t heard a thing.”
According to the Northern Irishman, a proper deal could likely be negotiated by American president-elect Donald Trump, who is an avid golfing fan. Trump has stated on one occasion that he could work out a deal between the PGA Tour and LIV League within minutes, ending the feud between the two. This is something McIlroy believes Trump can achieve with Tesla CEO Elon Musk by his side.
“He’s got Elon Musk, who I think is the smartest man in the world, beside him,” said McIlroy. “We might be able to do something if we can get Musk involved, too.
“Yeah, I think from the outside looking in, it’s probably a little less complicated than it actually is. Obviously, Trump has a great relationship with Saudi Arabia. He’s got a great relationship with golf. He’s a lover of golf. So, maybe. Who knows?”
Still, McIlroy understands that the president of the United States has a lot more to worry about than a deal between two leagues. But his statement shows that he, like other players and fans around the world, are seeking a quick way to the end of the skirmish that has affected golf for almost three years now.
Maybe such a deal could allow LIV players to take part in PGA events and vice versa, and could even make LIV events be recognised by the OWGR. It all remains to be seen what comes out of the current deliberations.
