Scottie Scheffler added another feather to his hat on Sunday after an excellent victory at the Augusta National to win this year’s Masters title.
The American, who has already won two titles this year, survived a competitive field that included Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, and Tommy Fleetwood to finish 11 under, 4-under 68, 4 shots ahead of runner-up Ludvig Aberg, while Morikawa, Max Homa, and Fleetwood were all tied at third place at 4 under par.
The world number one, who won the title in 2022, started the final round with a one-shot lead but did not see his lead strengthen as straight pars on the first two holes saw him struggle for a bit, but not lose his lead.
A birdie on the third seemed to redeem him a bit but the next few holes did not see him fare too well. At that point, impressive putts from Aberg and Homa were already tied with him at the lead around the seventh hole.
Scheffler’s game began to improve on the ninth and by the 11th, he already had a 3-shot lead. Three back-to-back birdies between the 14th and 15th made it clear that the win was going to Scheffler, then straight shots at the final two holes sealed his victory.
The now two-time Masters winner has been having an impressive season, and Sunday’s victory has made things a lot better. The 27-year-old is also expecting to be a father soon and spoke about that after the match, saying he would still be as competitive as ever but nothing that his priority will change.
He said: “I will go home, soak in this victory and enjoy the birth of my first child. I am looking forward to celebrating with Meredith – it’s been a long week without her. My priorities will change very soon. My son or daughter will be the main priority, along with my wife, so golf will now be probably fourth in line.”
