Tiger Woods will not feature at the Masters Tournament in 2026 after confirming he is stepping away from competition following a car crash in Florida on March 27.
The 50-year-old said he will focus on treatment and his well-being after being charged with driving under the influence.
The incident took place on Jupiter Island, where Woods resides. According to local authorities, his vehicle overturned in a single-car accident.
Officers reported signs of impairment at the scene, and Woods was later charged before being released on bail.
He has pleaded not guilty, with the situation leading to an immediate pause in his playing schedule.
Woods’ statement read: “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my wellbeing and work toward lasting recovery. I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. “
Confirmation of his withdrawal ends any uncertainty over a potential return at Augusta, where Woods has built much of his major record.
He has won the event five times, with his most recent title coming in 2019, and has maintained a long run of made cuts at the course across different stages of his career.
Chairperson of Augusta National Golf Club, Fred Ridley, acknowledged the decision, with the club backing Woods’ move to step away and address his situation.
The tournament proceeds without one of its most recognisable figures, removing a storyline that has often shaped coverage in recent years.
Woods has previously used Augusta as a point of return after injury setbacks, but this situation places his focus away from competition.
The timing follows his latest recovery period after surgery in October 2025, adding to an extended run of physical interruptions.
His absence leaves a gap in the field for the April event, which runs without a player who has remained closely linked to Augusta across multiple decades.
