Asia Cup: India advances to final with win over Bangladesh

India earned their place in the Asia Cup final with a 41-run victory over Bangladesh on Wednesday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Batting first, India set a competitive total of 168 for 6 in their 20 overs, thanks mainly to a 75-run innings by Abhishek Sharma and a late 38 not out from Hardik Pandya.

The Indian innings started brightly with openers Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad putting together a 72-run partnership in the powerplay, giving India a solid foundation.

Abhishek Sharma’s aggressive approach added further boost. However, after Sharma’s run-out, which was expertly executed by Bangladesh’s Rishad Hossain, India lost momentum in the middle overs.

The middle order failed to move fast, and wickets fell at regular intervals, preventing India from crossing the 170-run mark. Hardik Pandya’s innings in the final overs ensured India posted a defendable total.

Rishad Hossain was key for Bangladesh with the ball. He took two important wickets and was involved in the crucial run-out, maintaining consistent pressure.

Other bowlers, including Mustafizur Rahman and Tanzim Hasan Sakib, were economical and picked up wickets when it mattered, limiting India’s scoring options after the powerplay.

Chasing 169, Bangladesh struggled to maintain control. Saif Hassan was the standout performer for Bangladesh with a resilient 69 off 51 balls, during which he was dropped four times, an opportunity India did not take advantage of. His efforts kept Bangladesh’s chase alive though support at the other end was limited.

The Indian wrist-spinners turned the game in their favour in the second half of Bangladesh’s innings. Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel shared five wickets among them.

Their tight bowling frustrated the Bangladesh batsmen, who found scoring increasingly difficult as the required run rate climbed.

Jasprit Bumrah also played a vital role, taking two wickets and keeping the batsmen in check with his disciplined bowling. Eventually, Bangladesh were bowled out for 127 in 19.3 overs, well short of India’s total.

This win means India will face either Pakistan or Bangladesh in the final, depending on the outcome of their upcoming match.

Sri Lanka’s exit from the tournament was confirmed as a result of this match. India’s bowling and impressive performance with the bat was effective in seeing them through to the last stage of the event. All eyes will now be on them as they aim for their ninth Asia Cup title.
