The PCB has slapped a PKR 5 million fine, roughly US$18,000, on every 2026 T20 World Cup squad member for substandard results in the tournament. 

Although Pakistan won their last match against Sri Lanka on Saturday, they failed to earn enough margin to remain in the event.

The campaign began with promise in Group A. Pakistan secured victories over the Netherlands by three wickets, the United States by 32 runs, and Namibia by a massive 102 runs. 

A humiliating 61-run loss to India derailed their progress, as India posted 175-7 and bowled Pakistan out for 114. That defeat fueled widespread criticism back home and set the tone for struggles ahead.

Expectations climbed higher after Pakistan made it to the Super 8. Yet they managed only one win, which was the narrow victory over Sri Lanka, while earlier losses to England and others sealed their elimination. 

This marked the fourth straight ICC senior men’s event without a semi-final appearance, a low point for a team with a storied white-ball legacy. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi authorised the penalties.

Players faced the sanctions immediately post-tournament, with no escape clauses tied to deeper runs. 

The fine exceeds monthly retainers for many central contracts, hitting wallets hard. Board sources described the measure as accountability in action, rather than a disciplinary measure: rewards for wins, cuts for failures. ​

This is not the first time the PCB will take measures against their players, the most recent being some months ago, following Pakistan’s loss to India at the Asia Cup. That, however, was a suspension that was later reversed. 

The reaction inside Pakistan has been sharply divided. 

While the PCB insists the fines are about accountability and performance standards, some former greats and fans have criticised the board’s leadership more broadly, suggesting that poor management, and not just player execution, contributed to the disappointing outcome. 

It’s not clear at this time if the PCB will reverse the decision.
