Uganda men qualify for first Cricket World Cup

Uganda has secured a historic spot in the Men’s T20 World Cup, marking their maiden appearance in any World Cup format. The team secured their spot with an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Rwanda, reaching 8.1 overs and dusting the opposition for 65 runs in a match that a lot of Ugandans would not forget in a hurry.

Uganda can now anticipate their debut on the global stage as they prepare to compete in the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA next June. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Ugandan cricket.

Uganda’s success in the Africa Qualifier not only secured their place but also ended the qualifying campaign for Zimbabwe and Kenya, who were vying for the final spot. Zimbabwe managed to secure a victory over Kenya by 110 runs, but Uganda’s dominant performance against Rwanda rendered that victory inconsequential in the qualification race. This victory, their fifth in six games during the Africa Qualifier, secured second place in the table, with Namibia already having qualified.

The pivotal moment in Uganda’s journey came earlier in the competition when they defeated Zimbabwe, finishing two points ahead of their rivals. This secured their position as the second team from the Africa Qualifier to make it to the T20 World Cup next year.

Expressing his emotions, Uganda’s captain, Brian Msaba, described the achievement as “pretty surreal.” He emphasized the hard work, sacrifice, and years of toil that went into reaching this point: “A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to get us where we are today. It has been years of toil and hard work, four or five years of sacrifice.”.

Msaba highlighted how much the victory meant to Uganda and what it meant to African cricket. He further expressed hope that the government and sponsors would support and recognise the potential beyond cricket’s traditional powerhouses.
