Favorites roll into the Super Bowl LIV

The NFL Conference Finals were played on Sunday between the AFC and NFC hopefuls. Kansas City Chiefs played host to Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers took on visiting Green Bay Packers.

The home teams were heavily favored to win and progress to the Super Bowl and both favorites prevailed with ease. There was no question of the better teams at this stage with KC upending the Titans 35-24 and 49ers taking the spoils 37-20.

Kansas City was the only team remaining of the last season’s playoff contenders. Being touted as one of the biggest favorites to win the Super Bowl from the beginning of the season, the Chiefs kept their cool despite losing to the Titans in the regular season.

In the Conference Final game, the Titans started strong as they have always done and took the lead by field goal and then a rushing TD by the team MVP Derrick Henry. Chiefs already went down 7-17 midway through the second quarter, but Tyreek Hill’s second TD and Patrick Mahome’s individual effort secured the home team’s 21-17 lead heading into the half-time.

Chiefs proved their capability in the second half, stopping Titans time and time again. After a scoreless third quarter the Chiefs finished off the game with two touchdowns early in the fourth and despite Titans clinging within range until the end, the home team never looked like dropping the ball. Final score of 35-24 was well deserved and the Chiefs will head to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1970.

San Francisco has been one of the Cinderella stories of the season, although they gave signs of their competitiveness early on the regular season. Their impressive flight has continued and it was the Packers turn to get overrun by Jimmy Garoppolo and his offense. Especilly running back Raheem Mostert was impossible to contain and while the 49ers threw only for 69 yards all game, Mostert squeezed in four touchdowns, breaking all sorts of records on the way.

Packers issues in the defense were obvious and Aaron Rodgers was left toothless in the offense as well. Leading 27-0 at half-time, 49ers seemed certain to march into the Super Bowl with ease. Aaron Jones gave Green Bay a small glimmer of hope with two touchdowns, but the visitors never got closer than 14 points. Robbie Gould finished off the game with a field goal and Aaron Rodgers final Hail Mary only resulted in an interception. The 49ers trip to Super Bowl is their first since losing to Baltimore Ravens in 2013.
