NFL Conference Finals ahead

The American football season is coming to a close on the 2nd of February with Super Bowl LIV played in Miami, Florida, the home of Miami Dolphins.

The reigning champions New England Patriots have already been eliminated, as have the last season’s runner ups Los Angeles Rams. In fact, only one team, Kansas City Chiefs, out of all the last season’s playoff teams has made it into the conference finals this season. The attendees to the Super Bowl will be decided on this Sunday the 19th, with Kansas City hosting the dark horse of the season, Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers playing host to Green Bay Packers.

To emphasize the difficulty of predicting the NFL playoffs, none of the three conference finalists even made it to the post season last year. Kansas City fell to the eventual champions in this phase, but now have seemingly easier route to the Super Bowl, facing Tennessee Titans. On the other hand, Titans were not supposed to be in the playoffs and they definitely had no place beating Patriots and Baltimore Ravens on the way – but here they are.

The Titans are definitely the surprise team of the season. Their pre-season odds to win the Super Bowl were among the final third of the whole league, hovering around 80.00 so those who believed in the team can get a nice cash-out already – or can hold on to Titans flight to continue. Currently the odds for Titans to win the Super Bowl are at 7.50 and they are still the least favored team to win.

Kansas City is favored to win it all, with odds of 2.25. They were close to the Super Bowl last season and have only grown better in many ways. They beat the Texans comfortably 51-31 after a lousy start and it seems highly unlikely they would fall to the Titans – but so it did for the Patriots and the Ravens. To start the season, KC was among the favorites to win the Super Bowl, with odds of around 7.00 and they have duly delivered so far.

Sometimes changing the head coach pays dividends. Green Bay Packers had struggled under Mike McCarthy, not even making the playoffs last year despite Aaron Rodgers still on top of his game. Under guidance of Matt LaFleur, Packers paved their way to 2nd seed in regular season and pushed past Seattle Seahawks in the quarter-finals. They were around the top-10 to start the season, with Super Bowl odds of around 20.00. Now they are the challengers to KC and their opponents San Francisco, with odds of 7.00 to win the championship.

San Francisco 49ers has been another story of the season, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo escaping from the shadows of Tom Brady and carrying his team to 1st seed in NFC. Pre-season Super Bowl odds pegged SF around the middle of the pack, with odds of 40.00. Now their odds are slashed to 2.50, so it’s clear they’ve been one of the biggest positive surprises all season.
