Turkish GP to make a comeback in 2027

Turkish Grand Prix is set to return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027, ending a six-year absence and restoring one of the sport’s most popular venues. 

The race will take place at Istanbul Park under a new five-year agreement that keeps it on the schedule through at least 2031.

The announcement was made in Istanbul with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Stefano Domenicali, and Mohammed Ben Sulayem present, confirming the country’s long push to bring Formula 1 back has finally paid off. 

Türkiye had remained in discussions with the sport’s leadership since its last appearance in 2021, and this deal secures a stable return rather than a short-term stopgap.

Istanbul Park first hosted Formula 1 in 2005 and quickly built a reputation as one of the most demanding tracks on the calendar. 

Its 5.33-kilometre layout features sharp elevation changes with technical sections that reward precision, most notably the sweeping Turn 8, a multi-apex corner that places sustained stress on tyres and challenges driver control. 

That section alone has become one of the defining features of modern Formula 1 circuits.

The venue has produced several notable moments. Felipe Massa remains the most successful driver at the track, winning three consecutive races between 2006 and 2008 for Scuderia Ferrari. 

In 2020, Lewis Hamilton secured his seventh world title there, matching Michael Schumacher’s record in difficult wet conditions. 

The most recent race in 2021 was won by Valtteri Bottas, adding to a winners’ list that also includes Kimi Räikkönen, Sebastian Vettel, and Jenson Button.

Its return forms part of the confirmed 24-race calendar for 2027, alongside the comeback of the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao. 

The updated schedule will see circuits such as Barcelona and Spa rotate in future seasons, as Formula 1 continues to balance expansion with heritage venues.

The Turkish Grand Prix last appeared during the pandemic-adjusted calendars of 2020 and 2021, after previously dropping off the schedule. 

This new agreement moves it back into a long-term slot, giving fans in Türkiye and across the region a consistent presence on the championship calendar. 

Although dates for the 2027 season are still to be finalised, the lineup is almost set.
