Max Verstappen put an end to McLaren’s winning streak by claiming the win at the Italian Grand Prix over the weekend.

Starting from pole position, Verstappen was initially overtaken by Lando Norris after a wide run by the Dutchman at the first chicane.

However, Verstappen swiftly reclaimed the lead on lap four after a fierce battle, then steadily extended his advantage, eventually crossing the finish line comfortably ahead of the field.

This victory marked Verstappen’s third win of the season and his 66th Grand Prix triumph overall. Norris finished six seconds later to claim the second spot, while teammate Oscar Piastri finished third to complete the podium.

The race witnessed an intense intra-team contest between the McLaren drivers. On the second lap, Verstappen was instructed to yield to Norris, who then led briefly before losing the lead back to the Red Bull driver a couple of laps later. McLaren’s race strategy and execution became a focal point in the latter stages of the race. 

Both Norris and Piastri ran long stints on medium tires before making their pit stops. Unfortunately for Norris, his stop was marred by a slow pit stop due to a sticky front-left tire, causing him to be stationary for nearly 6 seconds. 

This delay allowed Piastri, who had pitted earlier and managed to get ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, to move up to second place temporarily.

However, in a controversial team order decision, McLaren instructed Piastri to give the position back to Norris, restoring the original driver order.

Despite this late shuffle, McLaren managed to secure a strong double podium finish, with Norris in second and Piastri in third, maintaining their position at the top of the championship standings. Piastri still sits comfortably at the top of the standings, and Norris is over 60 points ahead of Verstappen in third place. 

Things are looking good for the team, with eight races left in the season, but they will still have to decide on an effective strategy to prevent points from being lost between both drivers as we head into the final.
