American mixed martial artist Daniel Cormier has confirmed he is ready to call it quits on his illustrious MMA career following his Stipe Miocic trilogy fight. The third fight against the Croatian wrestler may well be his last ever in the sport.
His fans will be fuming at his decision to retire from their favorite sport imminently but what can they do? He has had a really long and successful career and there might not be a better time to pull the plug.
The former two-division champ made the announcement on The Ariel Helwani show on Monday afternoon, sending shockwaves throughout the boxing community. He revealed that his next fight will indeed be his last.
He already has big plans for his final MMA fight with a third consecutive fight against Stipe Miocic a priority for the American. The 30-year-old plans to complete a trilogy bout against his Croatian counterpart, with hopes of ending his career on a high.
“I’m going to fight this guy again. My intention is to fight him in the right way. It has to be against Stipe. No one else matters. ” Cormier said.
Stipe must be wondering what this guy’s deal with him really is, as the American always enjoys wrestling with him. However, he will be hoping to get the credit of sending Cormier straight into retirement by coming away with a victory.
Cormier’s decision to retire is one he has been very vocal about in recent years, reiterating he would like to quit at 40-year-old. In line with his plans, the time is now. However, the American isn’t hanging up his gloves without having a shot at redemption to win back his heavyweight title.
UFC president Dana White spoke earlier this week about his intentions of making this fight a reality. He explained that it would be great for UFC to get the two back in the ring for the third and final time.
There is only the one factor holding up this potential blockbuster clash, with Miocic healing up from his most recent bout that happened on August 17.
Cormier wants the match as soon as possible, already picking out December on his calendar as a possible date. We will wait to see if his plans materialize.
