Alcaraz beats Fritz to win Tokyo title

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 to win the Tokyo Open on September 29, 2025, marking his eighth singles title of the year and his 24th career title.

The victory came just nine days after Fritz had beaten Alcaraz at the Laver Cup, making this win a swift and decisive response for the world number one.

Alcaraz took control from the start, using his forehand and well-placed returns to dominate the court. He broke Fritz’s serve twice and converted his sixth break point while serving for the opening set. The Spaniard fired seven winners on his forehand with only four unforced errors.

After winning the first set 6-4, Fritz took a medical timeout to treat a thigh issue that hampered his movement for much of the second set. Alcaraz took advantage of the situation, varying his shots and keeping Fritz off balance.

Even though Fritz managed to break back once late in the second set, Alcaraz quickly responded and sealed the match on his second match point after 93 minutes.

Speaking after the match, Alcaraz was quite candid about the tournament and his performance: “I enjoyed every single second, [apart from] the five minutes I was on the floor after I hurt my ankle. I’m really happy with the level that I played, with everything. Starting the week not good with the ankle, and the way that I came back from that, I’m just really happy about it”.

He added on his season so far: “It’s been my best season so far without a doubt. That shows how hard I’ve worked just to be able to experience these moments and accomplish my goals.”

For Fritz, the theatrical nature of the match and his thigh injury were notable. He received a strapping on his thigh during the changeover in the second set and struggled with mobility thereafter.

Despite that, he managed to put up resistance and even won three games in a row late in the second set, but could not turn the tide.

With this Tokyo Open victory, Alcaraz improved his season record to 67-7 and stayed on course to maintain his position as the year-end No. 1. After the win, he announced he would skip the Shanghai Masters to focus on recovery before the final stretch of the season.
