Andrey Rublev won the Gijon Open after beating Sebastian Korda in the final by 6-2, 6-3 to win his fourth title of the season. The Russian was able to stamp his authority in the game from the get-go, breaking the American’s serve in the fourth game of the opening set.
Rublev was delighted after his impressive performance and stated that every tournament holds a lot of value for him as he wants to play in the Nitto ATP Finals, which will be played in Turin from November 13.
The young Russian dominated the contest as he fired a total of 29 winners, broke Korda’s serve on three occasions, and committed only four unforced errors throughout the game.
“I am really happy and really grateful,” Rublev said. “To win a title is always a special feeling because all the players are working to win a title and play the best tournaments. To win one more title here in my career is really important for me. All the weeks are important for me because I am fighting for the [Nitto ATP] Finals.”
With the Gijon Open title under his belt, Rublev has bettered his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals as he is currently ranked at sixth place in the ATP rankings.
“It would be a really amazing feeling [to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals] because this is the tournament players are dreaming of playing,” Rublev said. “To qualify for three years in a row will be really important for me.”
Earlier, Rublev bested Ilya Ivashka, Tommy Paul, and Dominic Thiem to make his way into the final.
This is the 24-year-old’s fourth title in the ongoing season after winning at Belgrade, Dubai, and Marseille.
