Daniil Medvedev clinches Vienna Open after beating Shapovalov

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev won his second tour-level title of the season by beating Canada’s Denis Shapovalov to win the Vienna Open. The Russian lost the opening set after the left-hander fired 21 winners and dominated the game.

However, the World No.4 was able to bounce back in the second set and the final set to get over the line. Medvedev won a total of 97 points as compared to Shapovalov’s 81. The top seed defeated the Canadian 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win his 15th tour-level title.

Medvedev was delighted after his hard-fought win of two hours and 16 minutes. The Russian said it is always a good feeling to come out on top when he was put under pressure by the opponent.

“I am really happy,” Medvedev said. “This match was the best of the week because Denis was really playing unreal until probably 4-3 in the second set. He dropped his level by maybe two per cent and I was able to use it. This is one of the best victories when you know your opponent is on top of you, but you try and stay there and do what you can.”

With this win, Medvedev improved his ATP head-to-head against Denis Shapovalov by 4-2. Furthermore, the Russian also confirmed his place in the upcoming Nitto ATP Finals, which will be played in Turin from November 13.

Medvedev will now take part in Paris Masters and revealed that he likes to play in Indoor tournaments towards the fag end of the season.
