Novak Djokovic prevailed in a tough encounter against Jaume Munar at the Shanghai Masters, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win after overcoming physical challenges and demanding conditions.
The match, lasting two hours and 40 minutes, tested the 38-year-old on multiple fronts, including a troublesome left ankle, an extremely humid atmosphere, and bouts of sickness that saw Djokovic throw up courtside during the contest.
Djokovic started strong, breaking Munar’s serve early and taking the first set 6-3. However, the Spaniard pushed back in the second set, eventually capturing it 7-5 as Djokovic showed signs of fatigue and discomfort.
The Serbian player even collapsed to the floor after dropping the second set, needing medical assistance and several timeouts for treatment of his leg issue.
Throughout changeovers, Djokovic frequently used an ice towel on his head to cope with the oppressive Shanghai humidity.
In the decisive third set, Djokovic took advantage of a costly error from Munar at the start, breaking his serve when his opponent missed a straightforward smash. With this upper hand, Djokovic adopted a more proactive stance, aiming to shorten points.
His forehand proved particularly effective in this set, producing quality shots with very fast speeds. These strong groundstrokes allowed Djokovic to control rallies and close out the match 6-2.
This victory marks Djokovic’s 11th time reaching the quarter-finals at the Shanghai Masters, having gone one to win four times out of his previous 10 advancements, the most by any player.
He is seeking his 41st ATP Masters 1000 title in a season where he currently ranks fifth in the ATP rankings. Despite the physical toll, the 24-time Grand Slam champion remained focused and unyielding to overcome both his physical limits and his opponent’s challenge.
Djokovic will face Belgian Zizou Bergs in the quarter-finals, as he continues to pursue his first hard-court title since winning in Paris in 2023.
