The 2022 Wimbledon Championship has begun, and we have seen some action from the players in just two days. The ban on Russian and Belarusian players is in force, meaning we would not get to see players like Daniil Medvedev and Aryna Sabalenka at this event. Still, the event does not lack action as some of the top-ranked players are participating.
On Monday, defending champion, Novak Djokovic, defeated South Korean Kwon Soon-woo in a game of four sets. Djokovic, who is chasing his first Grand Slam title of the year, recovered from a loss in the second set to then win the match 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4. This is the second Grand Slam event that Djokovic would be playing at this year after being denied the chance to play at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Top-ranked British player, Cameron Norrie, began his Wimbledon campaign on a good note after defeating Pablo Andujar 6-0 7-6 (7-3) 6-4. Norrie, who is yet to win a Grand Slam, is hoping to make it to the second week at Wimbledon for the first time.
Just like Norrie, compatriot Andy Murray also progressed to the second round at Wimbledon after defeating Australian James Duckworth 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 in a game that ended under floodlights. Murray is yet to win a title in years. Other players who have made it to the next round include Casper Rudd, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Marin Cilic.
In the women’s side, US Open champion, Emma Raducanu, won her opening match as she beat Alison van Uytvanck 6-4, 6-4. Raducanu, who is dealing with an injury, was hardly moved by her opponent as she was able to end the match in just two sets. The 19-year-old is yet to win a title since winning the US Open women’s singles title last September.
