Coco Gauff and Arthur Fils were crowned Cincinnati Open champions on Sunday, with Gauff defeating Jessica Pegula in the women’s final before Fils beat Frances Tiafoe to claim the biggest title of his career.
Gauff defeated fellow American Pegula 6-2, 6-4 to win the Cincinnati title for the second time and claim her first trophy of the 2026 season.
The fourth seed made a fast start, breaking Pegula early and building a 5-0 lead before closing out the opening set 6-2.
Pegula stayed closer in the second set, but Gauff continued to find opportunities on return and used her movement to keep her opponent from settling into long rallies. She eventually secured the 6-2, 6-4 victory in 75 minutes.
The title gives Gauff her fourth WTA 1000 championship and comes after a difficult period at the tournament last year, when she struggled badly with her serve.
She made 16 double faults during her 2025 quarter-final defeat to Iga Swiatek, prompting her to make significant changes to her serving technique during the following months.
Gauff now heads to New York with a title behind her and renewed confidence ahead of the US Open, which begins on August 30.
Fils then completed the men’s side of the tournament with a breakthrough victory over Tiafoe, beating the American 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 to win his first ATP Masters 1000 title.
The Frenchman took the opening set after breaking Tiafoe and using his power from the baseline to control the longer exchanges.
Tiafoe responded in the second set, raising his level and breaking twice to take it 6-1 and force a decider.
Fils immediately regained control in the final set. He broke early, moved into a 4-0 lead and continued to dictate the rallies as Tiafoe struggled to find the consistency he had shown in the previous set. Fils closed out the deciding set 6-0 to complete the biggest victory of his career.
The 22-year-old becomes the first Frenchman to win a Masters 1000 title since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2014. He is also only the third Black man to win an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, after Tsonga and American Ben Shelton.
The final was historic for another reason, with Fils and Tiafoe becoming the first two Black players to meet in an ATP Masters 1000 final.
