Italy shines with third-straight Davis Cup

Team Italy has triumphed in the Davis Cup for the third straight year, adding another chapter to their impressive tennis legacy. The 2025 final, held in Bologna, saw Italy defeat Spain with a clean 2-0 score. 

This victory marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title overall and makes them the first country since the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s to win three consecutive championships.

Matteo Berrettini’s role at the final was instrumental to Italy’s success. He opened the tie with a solid, efficient win against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta. Berrettini’s performance was notable for his strong serving; he fired 13 aces and never faced a break point during his 79-minute match.

His form in Davis Cup matches has been consistently robust, having entered the final with an 11-match winning streak stretching back several years.

Following Berrettini’s win, Flavio Cobolli fought through a tough match against Jaume Munar. After losing the opening set, Cobolli turned the match around by taking the next two in a hard-fought contest. 

That win sealed the title for Italy and proved they could still get the job done on the big stage, even without headline names such as Jannik Sinner, who wasn’t part of the team this time.

Part of the squad’s success could be attributed to a well-structured national tennis program, which paired emerging young talents like Cobolli alongside experienced players such as Berrettini.

The Italian team benefited from playing in front of a supportive home crowd at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna. 

The entire team was guided by captain and coach Filippo Volandri, whose choices and leadership were helpful in getting around the threat posed by the Spanish team, themselves six-time Davis Cup champions.

Italy’s victory this year was built on a foundation of strong singles play and effective doubles teamwork, even though the final did not require a doubles decider thanks to the first two singles results.

This consecutive three-year streak in the Davis Cup places Italy in an elite class within men’s tennis history.
