My intention was always to reach the highest heights in our sport – Novak Djokovic after winning Astana Open

Novak Djokovic continued his dream run going as he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets by 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Astana Open on Sunday. The Serbian won his 90th ATP title and also qualified for the ATP Finals, which will be played in Turin from November 13.

The former World No.1 completely dominated the Greek as he brought his best to the court. Djokovic faced no break points on his serve and lost a total of only seven points while serving.

The Serbian continued his domination against Tsitsipas as this is his fifth win over him in an ATP final and his eighth overall out of the 10 meetings between the two.

After winning his 90th ATP title, and joining the elite list of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Jimmy Connors, who all have won 90 or more titles, Djokovic said his intention was to always reach the pinnacle of the sport.

“I dared to dream, actually,” he said in the ceremony presentation. “I always hoped that I would be going to have a great career. Obviously, didn’t know the number of finals I was going to play, the number of tournaments I was going to win, but my intention was always to reach the highest heights in our sport.”

“I’m just very grateful and blessed to be able to play this well at this stage of my life,” Djokovic said. “You know, 35 is not 25. But I think the experience, probably, in these kinds of matches and big occasions helps as well to approach mentally in the right way.”

After winning his 21st Grand Slam at Wimbledon, Djokovic could not play in the US hard court swing due to his unvaccinated status and he admitted that it made him hungrier.

“Well, it did,” Djokovic said. “I could not ask for a better re-start of the season. I’m super-pumped and motivated to end the season as well as I have done these past couple of weeks.”
