Serena Williams inducted former rival and former tennis number one, Maria Sharapova, at the International Tennis Hall of Fame ceremony over the weekend.
Both players, legends in their own right, were honoured for their contributions to the sport, with Williams delivering the induction speech for one of the fiercest opponents she faced during her professional career.
Williams, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, began her speech by acknowledging what a surprise it was to see her there in such capacity: “I know I’m probably the last person you would be expecting to see here tonight. Honestly, a few years ago, I probably would have said the same thing.”
The 23-time Grand Slam champion then explained how she and Sharapova had mended their relationship over the years, leading to the Russian asking Williams to induct her to the tennis Hall of Fame.
The rivalry between Williams and Sharapova spanned over a decade, marked by intense matches, contrasting styles, and a fair share of drama. Their head-to-head record was heavily in favour of Serena, who won 20 of their 22 encounters.
Despite the lopsided nature of the statistics, Sharapova’s victories came at crucial moments, including the 2004 Wimbledon final, where she claimed her first Grand Slam title by defeating Williams.
Williams, however, led the majority of their matches. Their battles were not just physical but mental, often sparking media attention and fan debate.
Williams has been candid in interviews about the challenges Sharapova presented, stating that every match offered her a test she had to prepare for meticulously. “Whenever I saw her name next to mine in the draw, I made sure I practiced harder,” Williams said.
Off the court, both have moved past any rivalry bitterness into a professional respect. At the Hall of Fame event, Williams’ tone was respectful and gracious, as she spoke about Sharapova’s impact on the sport beyond their direct clashes.
Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion, expressed gratitude in her own speech, acknowledging the role Williams played in her career. “Serena did more than sharpen my game; she helped crystallize my sense of identity.”
