Dalton Knecht Shines in Lakers’ Win Against Suns

Dalton Knecht delivered a stellar performance in LeBron James’ absence, leading the LA Lakers to a thrilling 128-122 overtime victory against the Phoenix Suns in their preseason clash on Thursday night. Knecht, a rookie, showed his scoring prowess, putting the team on his back in crunch time to secure the win.

Knecht finished the game with 35 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, shooting an impressive 10-of-18 from the field. His shooting from beyond the arc was especially remarkable, hitting 8-of-13 from deep, while also converting 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. In his 31 minutes on the floor, Knecht committed just one turnover and one personal foul, highlighting his efficiency and discipline.

The 24-year-old’s heroics came late in the game, scoring 20 consecutive points for the Lakers during a crucial stretch. With just over a minute left in the fourth quarter, Knecht sparked a comeback, starting with a technical free throw and followed by two clutch 3-pointers, which tied the game at 111-111, sending it into overtime.

Knecht carried his momentum into OT, scoring five quick points with two free throws and another 3-pointer. He continued to torch the Suns’ defense, sinking two more 3-pointers and a layup. His final points, a result of a block on the defensive end, pushed the Lakers’ lead to 126-122 with 55 seconds remaining. Jaxson Hayes then sealed the game with a layup, giving the Lakers a six-point cushion.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick was effusive in his praise for Knecht’s performance, calling it “supernatural” and emphasizing the rookie’s elite shooting ability. Redick revealed a pre-game conversation with TNT announcer Reggie Miller, stating, “It’s high praise to say he’s in the top 1% of shooters … Well, nah, he’s in the top 1%.” Redick has been vocal about improving the Lakers’ shot profile and 3-point shooting, and Knecht’s performance may be a sign of things to come.

Knecht’s breakout game may have earned him a spot in the Lakers’ rotation, which is a difficult feat for any rookie, especially on a LeBron James-led team. However, his lethal shooting and poised mentality make a strong case for a larger role under Redick’s system this season.
