Max Strus Returns in Style After Long Injury Layoff for Cavaliers

Max Strus made an impressive return to action for the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, marking his season debut after missing the first 67 games due to a broken left foot.

The 6-foot-5 forward had been sidelined since the offseason, when he suffered a Jones fracture — an injury involving the bone that connects the little toe to the base of the foot. Strus underwent surgery on August 26, with an initial recovery timeline of three to four months before resuming basketball activities.

After months of rehabilitation, Strus finally stepped onto the court against the Dallas Mavericks, entering the game with 4:53 left in the first quarter. He wasted no time making an impact, knocking down two three-pointers from the left wing within his first 75 seconds, immediately energizing his team and the crowd.

Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson had indicated before the game that Strus would likely play between 20 and 24 minutes as he eased back into competitive action. Despite the long absence, the forward showed no signs of hesitation, delivering a confident and sharp performance in his limited minutes.

Speaking ahead of the game, Atkinson highlighted the emotional significance of Strus’ return. “I think it’s an emotional day when you witness someone go through what he has during the offseason and then struggling to get back. It’s emotional, but it’s also exciting,” he said.

The coach also emphasized the broader impact Strus brings beyond his on-court contributions. “And then just to get an injection of energy and the competitor he is back in the locker room. It’s good timing and will be a boost for the team, not just today but going forward,” Atkinson added.

Strus’ return comes at a crucial stage of the season, offering Cleveland added depth and experience. Last season, he averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists across 50 games, including 37 starts, establishing himself as a reliable presence in the rotation.

His early shooting display against Dallas suggests he could quickly regain rhythm and form, providing a timely lift for the Cavaliers as they push deeper into the campaign.

After a lengthy and challenging recovery, Strus’ comeback not only strengthens Cleveland’s lineup but also serves as a testament to his resilience and determination.
