Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold has confirmed that he will leave the club this summer upon the expiration of his contract, ending over two decades of association with his boyhood team.
The England international made the announcement on Monday morning, expressing a desire to seek a fresh challenge and push himself outside of his comfort zone.
Alexander-Arnold informed Liverpool head coach Arne Slot of his decision during the March international break. The right-back reportedly met with Slot face-to-face in the coach’s office to communicate his intention. During the discussion, he explained that he felt the need to explore new horizons in order to continue growing both personally and professionally.
Slot, who only recently took over as Liverpool manager, was said to be disappointed by the news but respected the player’s decision. Despite confirming his departure, Alexander-Arnold assured Slot that his commitment and focus would not waver for the remainder of the season. He also expressed his eagerness to return to action following an injury layoff.
Alexander-Arnold, who has long been a key figure at Liverpool, is now close to finalizing a move to Real Madrid as a free agent. The move would see him reunite with fellow England star Jude Bellingham at the Spanish giants. While no contract has been officially signed yet, the deal is expected to be completed once the current season concludes.
Throughout his career at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most creative defenders, helping Liverpool to major domestic and international titles. His departure will mark the end of an era, as the Merseyside club prepares for a future without one of its homegrown stars.
Liverpool are set to face Arsenal in a crucial Premier League clash on May 11, while Real Madrid will play Barcelona on the same day in a LaLiga showdown. Until then, Alexander-Arnold remains committed to giving his all for Liverpool before embarking on his new chapter in Spain.
