Wolverhampton Wanderers produced a dramatic late victory over defending Premier League champions Liverpool as Andre’s stoppage-time goal secured a 2–1 win and sent Molineux into celebration.
The hosts, currently bottom of the table, looked set to settle for a point after Mohamed Salah cancelled out Rodrigo Gomes’ opener in the second half. But deep into added time, Andre struck from the edge of the area and saw his effort deflect off Joe Gomez before finding the net, sealing an unexpected triumph for Wolves.
The late goal marked the fifth time this season that Liverpool have conceded a winner in injury time, a statistic that continues to frustrate head coach Arne Slot. The result leaves Liverpool in fifth place on the table, missing a chance to draw level on 51 points with Manchester United and Aston Villa in third and fourth. Wolves, meanwhile, remain bottom, still 11 points away from safety despite earning only their third league win of the campaign.
Wolves manager Rob Edwards could not contain his excitement as the winning goal went in, sprinting down the touchline to celebrate. The energetic reaction came at a cost, however. Speaking afterward, Edwards joked about the aftermath of his celebration.
“It’s the groin this time,” he told BBC Sport. “I felt it falling apart.”
Before kickoff, the match carried an emotional moment as supporters from both clubs paid tribute to former Wolves and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last July. Fans displayed banners in both sections of the stadium to honor the Portugal international.
The game itself began quietly. Liverpool dominated possession during a dull first half but failed to seriously trouble Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa. Set pieces also proved ineffective for the visitors, with several corners failing to beat the first defender.
Slot made a tactical change at halftime, replacing the booked Ryan Gravenberch with Curtis Jones, and Liverpool started the second period with greater urgency.
However, Wolves struck first when substitutes combined effectively. Tolu Arokodare held off Virgil van Dijk before finding Rodrigo Gomes, who cleverly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Alisson to give the hosts the lead.
Liverpool nearly responded immediately when 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha hit the post. Moments later, Salah equalized after Jean Ricner-Bellegarde lost possession, ending the Egyptian’s Premier League scoring drought that stretched back to November.
The match opened up late on as both teams searched for a winner. Ultimately, it was Wolves who delivered the decisive moment, with Andre’s deflected strike securing a memorable night for the struggling side and leaving Liverpool stunned.
