Andy Robertson to Leave Liverpool as an Era Nears Its End

Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool at the end of the season after the club confirmed the Scotland captain’s contract will expire this summer, bringing to a close one of the most successful spells of his career.

The 32-year-old left-back joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for £8 million and went on to become a central figure in the club’s modern revival. Across nine years at Anfield, Robertson made 373 appearances and helped Liverpool win nine trophies, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

In a video released to announce his decision, Robertson said: “I think now’s the time for me to move on”.

He also reflected warmly on his time at the club, adding: “The nine years I’ll look back on with a big smile on my face.”

Robertson’s departure follows a season in which his role has reduced under head coach Arne Slot. The arrival of Hungary left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth last year has limited Robertson’s chances, with the defender starting only six league matches this campaign.

Liverpool had previously explored the possibility of Robertson leaving in January, with Tottenham interested and a deal between the clubs agreed in principle. But the move did not go ahead because Liverpool could not recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.

Despite spending more time on the bench this season, Robertson made clear his commitment to the club remains unchanged until the very end. “This club means everything to me, the fans mean everything to me, the people connected to the club mean everything to me,” he said.

He continued: “I think I owe it to them still to, until my very last day, I’ll give everything to this football club, which I’ve done over the last nine years and I’m very proud of that.”

Robertson said a full farewell would come later, explaining: “The time to have the emotional farewell and tell the fans and the people connected to this club what they mean to me, that will come closer to the end. I don’t think I’m quite ready for that yet.”

His exit comes at a difficult moment for Liverpool, who are fifth in the Premier League and recovering from heavy defeats to Manchester City in the FA Cup and Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.

Mohamed Salah, who also joined Liverpool in 2017, is set to leave at the end of the season as well. In a message on Instagram, Salah wrote: “It’s been an honour to be your teammate and your friend. You’ve won it all and you leave as a legend. I’m sure we will meet again.”

Whether Robertson sees himself that way is another matter. “I’ll let other people say if I’m a Liverpool legend or not,” he said.
