Arsenal strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League with a composed 2–0 victory over Brentford, a result secured through goals from Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka. The win restores the Gunners’ five-point lead at the summit and extends their impressive unbeaten run across all competitions to 18 matches, including eight straight victories at home.
Manager Mikel Arteta made three changes to the side that drew with Chelsea on Sunday, bringing in Ben White, Noni Madueke and captain Martin Odegaard. The adjustments paid off almost immediately. In the 11th minute, White and Madueke combined neatly down the right flank, with White delivering a precise cross into the box.
Merino, once again deployed as Arsenal’s makeshift striker due to ongoing injuries to Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Viktor Gyokeres, met the delivery with a firm header to open the scoring.
Merino’s contribution continues his impressive run of form. Forced into a central attacking role, he has adapted seamlessly, and his goal against Brentford marked his 13th of 2025—the highest tally of any Arsenal player this year. His influence extended beyond scoring, as he played a key role in sealing the victory late in the match.
Brentford struggled to gain a foothold, pinned back for long stretches by Arsenal’s control and intensity. However, they nearly found an equaliser in the first half when Kevin Schade rose highest to meet a corner, his header tipped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper David Raya in one of the game’s pivotal defensive moments.
Arsenal finally put the match beyond doubt in stoppage time. Merino, dropping deeper into midfield, threaded a well-weighted pass through the Brentford back line to find Bukayo Saka. The winger’s effort slipped past Caoimhin Kelleher and, despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts, bounced over the line to secure the Gunners’ second goal.
The only concern for Arteta came in the form of injuries, as both Cristhian Mosquera and Declan Rice were forced off with knocks. Their condition will be assessed ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures.
Nonetheless, the night belonged to a confident Arsenal side that continues to show resilience and depth. With momentum building and key players stepping up in unfamiliar roles, their pursuit of Premier League glory remains firmly on track.
