Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili revealed he ignored the club’s penalty research during their Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea after discovering the coaching staff’s tactical notes were inaccurate.
The Georgian goalkeeper emerged as a hero on Wednesday night, saving a crucial penalty to help Liverpool advance after a 1-1 draw at Anfield was decided by a shootout.
Liverpool faced early setbacks in the shootout as Kostas Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch both missed.
However, Mamardashvili kept his composure and denied Emmanuel Emegha to give his side a crucial advantage.
Joe Gomez then converted his spot-kick, while Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana missed, sealing Liverpool’s progression.
Speaking after the match, Mamardashvili admitted that Liverpool’s coaching staff had provided unhelpful information. “I had this paper as well, but everything was wrong!” he said, referring to the penalty notes.
When asked whether the research helped him during the shootout, the goalkeeper replied, “No.”
Instead, the goalkeeper relied on his instincts and the body movements of Chelsea’s penalty takers. Explaining how he saved Emegha’s effort, Mamardashvili said he watched the striker’s standing leg before deciding to dive to his right.
He added that he had hoped to save more penalties but was satisfied that his decisive intervention proved enough to secure the win.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola praised the goalkeeper’s concentration and mental strength under pressure.
Iraola revealed that he had challenged Mamardashvili to save two penalties before the shootout, but the Georgian responded that Liverpool also needed an opponent to miss.
The manager added that the goalkeeper had come close to stopping several attempts, even when he did not make the save.
The victory highlights Liverpool’s ability to progress in a major cup competition despite missed penalties and unreliable pre-match information.
Mamardashvili’s performance also showed the importance of composure and quick decision-making in shootouts, especially when tactical preparation fails to deliver the expected advantage.
Liverpool will now look to build on the result as they continue their Carabao Cup campaign.
