Borussia Dortmund have been handed a potential boost ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga showdown with Bayern Munich, as Konstantinos Karetsas has returned to partial team training.
The Greek youngster has missed Dortmund’s last three games after suffering a ligament injury, but could be in contention for a place in the squad for the trip to the Allianz Arena.
Apart from long-term absentees Emre Can and Giannis Konstantelias, Niko Kovac could have a near full-strength squad available for the Klassiker.
At his pre-match press conference, the Dortmund head coach confirmed that all players who have featured in recent weeks are fit and took part in the final training session.
Kovac also provided a positive update on Karetsas, revealing that the 18-year-old attacking midfielder rejoined the group on Thursday for the first time since his injury.
He said the session was not particularly intense but marked an important step in the player’s recovery after being sidelined.
If his recovery continues without any setbacks, Karetsas could be included in the matchday squad for Saturday.
Kovac explained that the plan was for the youngster to train fully with the team on Friday, provided there were no negative developments overnight.
Karetsas, who joined Dortmund in the summer, has impressed in his brief appearances this season with his creativity and composure in the final third. His return would give Kovac another attacking option against the league leaders.
Dortmund head into the clash looking to close the gap on Bayern, who moved top after their 3-1 win over Freiburg last weekend.
With both teams dealing with injury concerns in recent weeks, having a deep squad could prove decisive.
Kovac’s side have shown resilience despite missing several key players, and Karetsas’s return would further strengthen their options.
The medical staff will closely monitor his progress, and a final decision on his involvement is expected after Friday’s training session.
